Hi, my name is Kevin John Bedwell, Jr. I have started the Public Land Man Outdoors Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube channel. Welcome to the PublicLandMan Blog where I'll publish outdoor-related content, and I'll continue to share tips, perso experiences, and tactics for hunting public land. Specifically, I want to share my success in hunting the beautiful public lands in Alabama. So, I bought a GoPro White 7, and I started filming my turkey hunts during the 2019 turkey season, and here we are!
I have always wanted to share my outdoor experiences with other people. I have hunted and enjoyed spending time in the outdoors nearly my entire life. My dad claims that he started taking me hunting when I was just 2 years old. My dad and I hunted with my uncle who had deer dogs, and there were a large group of buddies who hunted together every weekend on Treat Mountain. Treat Mountain is just outside of Borden Springs, Alabama. The mountain is actually split, half of the mountain in Alabama and the other half Georgia. My first experience of hunting is "turning dogs loose in a pine thicket," or in a "holler," and going to your spot, which always had a name. Back in those days we didn't need GPS or OnXmaps. There would be 25-30 people, and you'd turn a few packs of deer dogs out at a certain spot, and then guys would say, "I'll go to the Chimney Road," or "I'll go to the Little Thicket," and the list and names of locations goes on and on. There wasn't a ridge, hollow, or place on that mountain that didn't have a name.
Hunting in those days had more to do with camaraderie and the experience of being outdoors. People went hunting because they loved the outdoors and being around their buddies. The guys that hunted together on Treat Mountain loved that mountain, and they loved their deer dogs. Sure, they wanted to kill deer, but what I remember most is men enjoying being in the woods hunting with their buddies, and the chase (sport) of the hunt. This is what drew me to hunting, and kept me interested since those early years. These were regular, blue-collar guys getting away from their weekly jobs and responsibilities to do what they loved. I'm 30 years old now, and I enjoy doing the same thing.
During deer and turkey season, I'll be in the woods on some Alabama Public Land testing my scouting and knowledge of the woods. I hope that I can inspire others to get out and do the same.
